CNNI emerged as an internationally oriented news channel, with staff members of various national backgrounds, even though some accusations of a pro-U.S. Editorial bias persist. CNN International was awarded the on July 4, 1997. Ted Turner, in accepting the medal on behalf of the network, said: 'My idea was, we're just going to give people the facts.

We didn't have to show liberty and democracy as good, and show socialism or totalitarianism as bad. If we just showed them both the way they were.

Clearly everybody's going to choose liberty and democracy.' New international era (1995–2006) [ ]. CNN International logo from February 1, 1995, to December 31, 2005. In 1995, creative director Morgan Almeida defined a progressive rebranding strategy, to target CNNI's diverse global market, making the on-air look less overtly American and with a cleaner, simpler 'international' aesthetic going forward, the word 'International' in the channel's logo was replaced with a globe, and the new branding featured numerous international locations filmed in time-lapse, channel idents created in CGI with Velvet Design in Munich, and a news brand designed with The Attik in New York. 2006–2009 revamp [ ].

CNN International logo from January 1, 2006, to September 21, 2009. The network undertook another major rebranding effort in 2006 overseen by the award-winning creative vision of Mark Wright and London agency Kemistry, the ticker was replaced by a flipper, on-screen graphics were more unified and from October 2007 until August 2008, new studios were progressively rolled out. However, on January 1, 2009, CNN International adopted the 'lower-thirds' that CNN/US had introduced a month earlier which were inspired by the clean modern design of the CNNI rebrand efforts. In the U.S., CNNI North America was distributed overnight and on weekends over the financial channel, until that channel's demise in December 2004. It is now available as a standalone, full-time channel, usually as part of digital packages of cable providers including,, and. Going beyond borders (2009–2013) [ ] Throughout January until September 2009, CNN International adapted more programs that became geared towards a primetime European audience with a few titled after CNN International personalities, most notably the interview program Amanpour, on September 21, 2009, the channel launched a new tagline 'Go Beyond Borders', along with a new logo, and consolidated its general newscasts ( World News, CNN Today, World News Asia, World News Europe and Your World Today) into a single newscast entitled World Report.

The slogan 'Go Beyond Borders' emphasizes the international perspective that gives the information in this string and the plurality of the audiences, with this tagline, CNN also refers to the various platforms to disseminate their contents. The new image was created by the creativity and marketing department, and agency CNN Tooth & Nail.

An important element of the rebrand was a new evening program that adds the broadcast of programs Amanpour and World One, the makeover of CNN International has subject to a lot of criticism on both the new prime time lineup and the redesigned graphics. On January 11, 2009, in a bid to compete directly with 's then English-language international channel, the network launched a new production center: CNN, based in the. Then, CNN International adapted half-hour shows in its schedule with a new evening prime program for viewers, Prism. In 2010, CNN International launched new programs for its evening lineup in order to improve its schedule; in 2011, programs from CNN U.S. Were added to the CNN International schedule, including the talk program which was later cancelled and replaced with CNN Tonight hosted by Don Lemon.

CNN International logo from 2009 to 2014. This is CNN (2013–present) [ ] 'This is CNN' represents CNN International's rebrand with new sets and output in full 16:9 high definition. The 'This is CNN' slogan is also used on its sister network Regional and online versions [ ] There are six variants of CNN International: •, based in, •, based in London, •, based in, U.S. •, based in, •, based in, U.S. •, based in, The schedules of the different regional versions no longer differ significantly from each other, but there are still minor variations such as weather updates and show airtimes - notably Amanpour, which also airs at 22.00 HK time in Asia in lieu of the first half-hour of International Desk, and 23.00 CET in Europe in addition to its original airtime.

CNN has reported that its broadcast agreement in mainland China includes an arrangement that its signal must pass through a Chinese-controlled satellite, with this method of transmission, Chinese authorities have been able to black out CNNI segments at will. CNN has also said that its broadcasts are not widely available in mainland China, but rather only in certain diplomatic compounds, hotels, and apartment blocks. In June 2015, CNN International was made available online in the United States for through the CNNgo service. Simulcasts between CNNI and CNN/US [ ] Although dramatically scaled down since its early days, CNNI currently (as of mid 2017) draws from the feed of the main CNN channel for all editions of,, the first hour of Monday through Thursday editions of, the first hour of weekday editions of,, the Sunday edition of,,, and some documentaries. The ticker and timepiece of CNN/US are replaced by those of CNNI, although CNN/US's red logo on a white field is retained in the on-screen graphic (rather than replaced by CNNI's white logo on a red field), signifying CNN/US as the originating source. CNNI also simulcasts CNN/U.S.

Newscasts whenever major events happen in the United States or around the world. Examples include the, the crash of in the suburb of, the Hudson River plane landing, the attempted Christmas Day bombing of flight 253 and the death and memorial service of as well as scheduled events such as U.S. Elections, Presidential inaugurations and the annual ball drop from. Likewise, CNN/U.S. Occasionally turns to CNNI newscasts, primarily when major international news breaks during overnight hours in the U.S.

A notable case was during the and the aftermath of the. Simulcast CNNI coverage of the death of 's former Prime Minister on the night after her assassination took place. Simulcasts also happened from November 27 to 29, 2008, due to the terror attacks in, on January 4, 2009, when Israel launched strikes into Gaza, and during the early hours of January 14, 2010, due to the earthquake in Haiti. From 2005 until early 2008, CNNI's aired on CNN/U.S.

During the 12–1 p.m. ET timeslot, that program was initially pre-empted by Issue #1, a program dealing in the American economic, financial, and housing sectors as part of the lead-up to the, and permanently replaced by another hour of in September 2008. During the, CNN/U.S. And CNNI simulcasted coverage after Anderson Cooper 360° ended. That coverage ended around 12:40 a.m. EDT and the channels resumed their normal programming.

Furthermore, the next day, with storms impending, CNN/U.S. Had to move onto CNNI's U.S. News set and weather center to avoid water from possible flooding during the storms. On January 17, 2011, CNN/U.S.

Dropped its early morning rebroadcasts of and Anderson Cooper 360° during the 4–6 a.m. ET time period, and began to simulcast World Business Today and World One from CNNI in those slots. Both newscasts the only programs broadcast entirely in the picture format on CNN/U.S.' Standard-definition and high-definition feeds (the SD feed of CNN/US switched to a screen format on January 11, 2011).

World One was dropped from CNN/U.S. Just a few months later to allow the addition of an extra hour of American Morning which has been replaced with.

As of August 2014, following in, a permanent simulcast of CNNI's block of Newsroom with and was added to the late-night lineup of CNN/U.S., serving as a lead-in to Early Start. In late 2015, and anchor began to anchor a two-hour block of the simulcast from CNN studios in.

Accusations of US-centric viewpoint [ ] Former CNN Beijing and Tokyo bureau chief described how the news-gathering priorities of CNN International were skewed to 'produce stories and reports that would be of interest to CNN USA.' Nevertheless,, a former correspondent who was with the and later served as a Middle East-based correspondent for now-defunct, noted that when she spoke on international affairs, CNN International would usually give her more airtime than CNN/US.

For its own part, former CNN executive has defended CNN International's 'international' perspective, saying 'No matter what CNN International does, as long as CNN's headquarters is in the United States people are going to say, well, it's an American service, but the reality is that it's an international service based in the United States, and we don't make any apologies about that.' Accusations of anti-Israel bias [ ] In 2002, spearheaded a campaign to expose CNN for pro-Palestinian bias, citing public remarks in which equated Palestinian suicide bombing with Israeli military strikes, on November 18, 2014, a misleading headline was posted by CNN.

Two Palestinian terrorists had entered a synagogue with knives and a gun, killing four Jewish worshippers and wounding seven, the headline stated instead that two Palestinian were killed by Israeli police, thus equating the perpetrators of the massacre of Jews with the killing of the armed terrorists. The headline failed to mention the four Jews who were murdered in this. CNN stated that the attack occurred at a mosque, when in fact the synagogue was attacked, compounding the bias. Accusations of pro-American bias [ ] CNN is one of the world's largest news organizations, and its international channel, CNN International is the leading international news channel in terms of viewer reach. Unlike the BBC and its network of reporters and bureaus, CNN International makes extensive use of affiliated reporters that are local to, and often directly affected by, the events they are reporting, the effect is a more immediate, less detached style of on-the-ground coverage.

This has done little to stem criticism, largely from Middle Eastern nations, that CNN International reports news from a pro-American perspective, this is a marked contrast to domestic criticisms that often portray CNN as having a 'liberal' or 'anti-American' bias. Accusations of anti-China bias [ ] A Chinese website,, has accused CNN and western media in general of biased reporting against China, with the catchphrase 'Don't be so CNN' catching on in the Chinese mainstream as jokingly meaning 'Don't be so biased'. Pictures used by CNN are allegedly edited to have completely different meanings from the original ones; in addition, the channel was accused of largely ignoring pro-China voices during the Olympic Torch Relay debacle in San Francisco. On July 7, 2010,, senior Middle East editor and a CNN journalist for 20 years, was fired after she expressed admiration on her account for a militant Muslim cleric and former Hezbollah leader who had recently died. Accusations of propaganda and censorship [ ] In October 2011, claimed to the Syrian government news agency SANA that she had been directed by CNN to report selectively, repetitively, and falsely in order to sway public opinion in favor of direct American aggression against and, and that this was common practice under CNN. She subsequently repeated this claim, addressing the degraded state of in an interview [ ] during which she also discussed the Bahraini episode, suggesting paid-for content was also taken from,, and other states, that the had also been employed as a pretext to pre-empt substantive within the U.S., and that following the Bahrain reporting, her investigative department had been terminated and 'reorganized', and her severance and used as a threat to intimidate and attempt to purchase her subsequent silence. Lyon claimed to have met with, president of CNN International, twice about this issue in 2011 and had claimed that during the second meeting she was threatened and intimated to stop speaking on the matter.

CNN issued a detailed response to Lyon's claims about its coverage of Bahrain. Lyon also claimed on the Russian news channel that CNN reporters, headed by Maddox, have been instructed to over-cover Iran as a form of propaganda, and that CNN International has been paid by the Bahraini government to produce and air news segments intentionally painting them in a positive light. NHTSA chief Nicole Nason pledged to introduce new regulations on school bus safety, and revisions to the government's New Car Assessment Program and its 'ease of use' rating system for child safety seats. She also said a Bush administration working group is on pace to propose vehicle tailpipe emissions limits by the end of this year, with a final regulation in place by the end of 2008. In pledging quicker action, Nason noted the fast turnaround in getting new rules mandating electronic stability control, an anti-rollover technology.

The operation, named Goldfinger 2 has been launched to coincide with the start of the school term and will see officers from the Met's Transport Operational Command Unit (TOCU) on buses to reassure the public. Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Safer Transport Teams will also be deployed during daytime and early evenings across 20 boroughs, including Bromley, Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham. Transport for London, who are funding the initiative, will also be providing Revenue Protection Officers to carry out static and mobile inspections to check for fare evasion and ensure passengers have paid the correct fare for their journey. Cape Town,South Africa - Independent Online, by Sipokazi Maposa -11 Sept 2007: -- The behaviour of drivers of public transport vehicles, who are at the frontline as ambassadors to tourists visiting the city, is still a concern, says Transport and Public Works MEC Marius Fransman.

The roles of these ambassadors were important in shaping the experiences of visitors. The introduction of the new 110 Man Explorer buses was a 'step forward' in providing commuters with quality and efficient public transport. At least 260 000 people in the city used buses daily, Fransman said.

The delivery of the buses had already started in some areas, and was set to be completed before the end of the year, with at least 150 more drivers set to be employed. Newbury,England,UK - The Newbury Weekly News Group -12 Sept 2007: -- More than a thousand people have backed a plan to remove buses from pedestrianised parts of Newbury. The Liberal Democrats say that it is only a matter of time before someone is hit by a bus in town, and want to see them re-routed away from Northbrook Street and through Park Way instead. However, their Conservative rivals say that driving buses through Park Way is not an option.

Since buses returned to the road after a revamp last year, there have been reports of close shaves involving buses and pedestrians. Speaking at the meeting, Liberal Democrat leader Jeff Brooks said that if someone was knocked down tomorrow, buses would be withdrawn immedi ately.

Brisbane,Queensland,Australia - The Brisbane Times, by Georgina Robinson -September 12, 2007: -- Every day last month, 28 buses were too crowded to pick up Brisbane commuters - and a proposal to put an extra 36 on the road by July next year will not ease the squeeze any time soon. Overcrowding on city buses stepped up a notch in August with 871 Brisbane City Council buses forced to drive past waiting passengers on busy routes. The figures came just days before public transport chair Victoria Newton presented Lord Mayor Campbell Newman with a $20 million plan to put 36 'sweeper buses' on the city's 10 busiest routes. The extra services would follow scheduled buses to pick up any passengers left behind. (Photo from juts.janes.com: Part of the Brisbane busway). Charlotte,NC,USA - WCNC, by JEFF SONIER -September 10, 2007: -- How safe are the buses that your kids are riding to and from school?

That may depend on the mechanics who work on those buses. North Carolina law says every school bus has to be checked at least once every 30 days by local school system mechanics.

But what if those mechanics don't find serious safety or mechanical problems? Or what if they don't fix what they do find? The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction show that state school bus inspectors parking dozens of Charlotte Mecklenburg school buses that were found unsafe, or mechanically unfit – even after they were okayed by CMS mechanics. The inspection records for bus number 1065 illustrate the problem. CMS mechanics at Orr Road said the bus was fine.

But that’s not what state inspectors reported. They parked number 1065 for what they called “multiple safety issues” – finding problems with the brakes, the exhaust system, the suspension, the backup lights, the brake lights and the front warning lights. Baltimore,USA - The Baltimore Sun -September 9, 2007: -- Howard County is considering the formation of its own mini-fleet of school buses. The buses would be used to fill in when private contractors have trouble providing all the buses needed each day to cover the system's routes. The plan is for the school system to purchase two buses and hire three drivers during the 2008-2009 school year.

Shimla,Himachal,India - HimVani -10 Sept 2007: -- Himachal Pradesh government has given a new definition to women empowerment by reserving 33% seats in all government and private buses for the fair sex.

The government has issued directions that violation of this order will be dealt with severely. All buses will now mandatorily have to specify in bold letters seats reserved for women. The transport department also plans to carry out surprise raids in buses to check any violation of the order. It's hard to say just how inadequate public transit is. After all, there's no statistic that measures how many people don't take a bus because they can't get to it, or because it doesn't run late enough for them to get home from work Annapolis,MD,USA - The Annapolis Capital, by Eric Hartley -September 09, 2007: -- Only a few dozen people a day ride the city buses that run from Annapolis to Kent Island and south county.

So the cancellation of the two routes at the end of this month might seem like a simple inconvenience for a few. But, in fact, it exacerbates a problem that's only going to get more acute.

People who work odd hours for low pay - restaurant or retail workers, for example - are often the very ones who need public transportation the most. And they're the ones least helped by a system set up largely for commuters. Mass transit works Woodbridge,VA,USA - Potomac News (subscription) -September 10, 2007: -- More than half of the commuters who drive toward the District of Columbia carpool, ride a bus or take the Metro. The region's bus and Metro systems are being utilized by more commuters than those who drive on highways in single-occupant vehicles, according to the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission. Commuting alone in a car isn't progressive anymore and it certainly isn't worth the time, money or pollution. Tampa,FL,USA - InjuryBoard, by David P. Lowe -9 Set 2007: -- According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, which keeps bus accident statistics: In school bus crashes over the last couple of decades, fewer than 10% of school bus occupants have had any injury and 90% were not injured at all.

The occupant most frequently injured is the bus driver since that seating position does not have the same passive occupant protections that passenger seats have, such as flexible and padded seat backs. The persons most likely to be injured in a school bus crash are drivers and passengers of vehicles that strike the bus or are struck by the bus. Sixty percent of school bus fatalities involve non-bus occupants. Small vehicles do not do well in a crash with a big yellow bus or any other big vehicle, and should be driven accordingly.

The majority of school bus crashes are cited as the fault of the other vehicle's driver. Ellensburg,WA,USA - The Daily Record, by DON GRONNING -9 Set 2007: -- “Hi Pat,” says one youngster, clambering aboard the bus for the ride home from the second day of school.

Pat is Pat Young of Ellensburg, and she has been driving a school bus for 30 years. She knows her passengers by name and greets her young rider. When asked if she ever transported the child of a former passenger, she said yes. “I’ve hauled them, then their child, then their grandchildren,” said Young, who has never had an accident in her 30 years of school bus driving. One of her more satisfying memories is of a student she didn’t get along with particularly well. “I hauled her for years, then she graduated and I forgot about her,” said Young. Then one day she stopped to pick up a rider and the mother came out to put her little girl on Young’s bus.

The mother was the woman who Young thought didn’t like her. * India - Trucks and Buses coming up from Daimler Chrysler in New Delhi,India - TechwHack, by Somanshu -9 Sept 2007: -- The Indian automotive market is all set to see luxury commercial vehicles from the stable of the company which current sell Mercedes Benz cars. Bangkok,Thailand - The Nation, by Stephen Cleary - 7 Sept 2007: -- Anyone who has spent much time in the Land of Smiles and especially the concrete jungle of the capital, will have been completely dumbfounded at some of the amazing public transport on offer. Let me start today with the meanest of the mean and that is the one and only non-air-conditioned Bangkok bus.

Just how many times over the years have we heard some enlightened government official lecturing Bangkokians something along the lines of “Don’t take your car, take a bus!”. All very easier said than done, especially when the buses at peak hours are already more crammed with passengers than a rickety Indian train. Should the capital’s car riding population suddenly decide to adhere to this wordly government advice, then it is certainly advised that ladders be attached to the rear end of buses, so commuters will be able to climb up and sit on the roofs. * USA - Rolls Out Eco-Friendly Bus Fleet New York,NY,,USA - Cars & Transportation, by George Spyros -1 Sept 2007: -- All 162 school buses in Greece (That's the Greece Central School District in New York State) have been retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts and crankcase spiracle filters to reduce air pollution to which children are exposed. In the final installment of this Greek Trilogy, we just couldn't resist the punning.

A project like this cost hundreds of thousands of dollars but the best part for the Greece Central School District and the taxpayers is that it was done at no cost to them. The key points are as follows: Passenger journeys on local buses in England rose by 4 per cent in the last year.

Over the same period, passenger journeys on light rail systems in England increased by 9 per cent. Many of the other regions of England saw increases in the number of bus passenger journeys in the last year, as a result of the introduction of free concessionary bus fares for disabled and older (aged 60+) residents. The largest rise was for the East of England region which saw an 11 per increase in passenger journeys.. Los Angeles,CAL,USA - Metro Rider LA -7 Sewt 2007: -- Metro’s Rapid bus network has been the brigadier general in the public relations offensive for bus rapid transit. Bus rapid transit builds a rail transit system without even having to lay down track, and transit users cannot tell the difference.

Metro succeeded admirably. It has built 6-lane guideways for buses, and the spare capacity can accommodate other vehicles! It has efficiently allocated the use of proof-of-fare machines by placing them on board the vehicles! The vehicles, indistinguishable from rail cars apart from the red livery, pimp-strut up to traffic lights and demand, “Where’s my green, bee-yotch?”. Kano,Nigeria - Reuters -7 Sep 2007: -- Two buses collided in a head-on accident in northwest Nigeria on Friday, killing 33 passengers, road marshals said. One of the vehicles was trying to avoid an animal crossing the road when it smashed into another bus travelling in the opposition direction on the busy Gusau-Talata Mafara highway in Zamfara state, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said. 'One of the vehicles caught fire immediately. Thirty-three people died in the accident, while nine others were injured,' Zamfara FRSC commander Umar Liman told. Devastating road accidents are frequent in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and top oil producer, where a crumbling road network, poorly maintained vehicles and dangerous driving combine to make the roads perilous.
