I've been having so much fun with the game since I got it and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a 3DS. My favorite 3DS game is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. (look at my username, seriously) I bought an XL specifically for the game, I imported a Circle Pad Pro LL specifically for the game. I have played it solo for 220 hours so far, bringing my total Monster Hunter time to around 1300 hours. Anyway, the gameplay is the draw. It's absolutely spectacular. Sometimes it can feel a little esoteric, it's fairly complex for a 3rd person action game.
It demands precision straight from the get-go, it punishes mistakes and heavily rewards success. The feeling of accomplishment you get from slaying a big angry dragon the first time is second to no other game. Weapon classes are diverse enough that it's damn near guaranteed you'll find something you like, and quick. We have giant, heavy, impacting greatswords that convey the feeling of damage very well.
We have precise, effective lances that provide survivability as well as damage output. We've also taken the lance formula, and shoved a cannon in it.
Now it's a gunlance. They're overall crazier.
We have stylish, satisfying longswords that are highly maneuverable (that feint slash) and easy to pick up. Fast, combo based weapons like dual swords and the classic sword and board provide maneuverability, versatility, and battlefield support. Hammerers carry the force of the earth and wind to play golf with wyvern skulls. Hunting horns are the bards - specific damage, party support everywhere. I've seen some damned effective HH hunters.
We have Slash Axes (or Switch Axes depending on who you ask), they're colossal battleaxes that morph into swords, with peerless versatility. Ranged players can feel right at home with bows and bowguns, being quick fray gunners or long range artillery, but they're never out of the battle.
Armor made from the skin and bone of those you've felled provides all of your abilities. Any statistical upgrades that aren't controlled by your weapon start here, with customization found in the traditional gem/socket system. They're usually hard to get, especially in higher ranks, but they're a mark of skill as well as game-changing ability bonuses. When you see someone online wearing a helmet made from the crown of horns on an elder dragon, you know they had to fight through hell to get it.
And then they had to look said elder dragon in the eye and beat the shit out of its face. But you can build armor for anything, elemental resistance, evasion, trapmaking, gathering, weapon maintenance, party support, and BBQin', just to name a few. Monsters are mostly unique. Every one will provide a different challenge, every one has its own habits and ecology, combat tactics and natural weapons. You'll certainly see similarities, but they're usually shallow and fairly infrequent. Most monsters have subspecies, which add or change an elemental ability, and switches up the moveset a bit. Often they're tougher, palette-swapped, and like their eggs cooked differently than their 'common' bretheren.
Monsters will gain new, species-specific moves and tactics as you move up in hunter rank. I could regale you with tales of when I was a garden variety scrublord, facing the intense terror of the King of the Skies, Rathalos. Or I could tell you about more recent exploits, such as seamlessly downing the World Eater, Deviljho. Every monster will be as unique as you could ever expect. Everything's better with multiplayer, right? Well, yes and yes.

Monster Hunter's hub->quest->rewards->repeat system can feel like a grindy MMO at times, especially if you're one of those people that likes to finish a game. So you bring some friends! Hunting with friends is possibly the best and worst thing you'll ever do. Best, because if you're all at the same level, you're all adapting, you're all learning, your success is dependent on at least one of you learning something. If you're not at the same level, you'll likely either be carrying or being carried -- which isn't a bad thing!
Carrying gives you the opportunity to analyze a friend's play and offer tips, being carried gives twice as much information. It's the worst thing you'll ever do, because you won't want to stop. Something about bringing friends to slay a horrifying mutation of a puffer fish meeting an angler, or fire-spewing salamanders with armor made out of lava is just too endearing.

Great battles raged with them, and stronger monsters were constantly developed to keep up with the opposition.
Eventually, something called the Equal Dragon Weapon was created, it being a massive dragon with what has to be ludicrous power, given our current set of elder dragons that are all doom and gloom and apocalyptic. Anyway, some shit happened, and BAM post apocalypse, humanity is on the brink of extinction and survives on hunting monsters. A few things like guns made it, but are often referred to as 'ancient tech' and are expensive and hard to recreate. This is very relevant to the environment, quite a few places you explore will have some creepy ruinous vibe to it, if you're looking for it.

Yeah, the MH demos are absolutely ridiculously bad, not a representation of the actual game. They're less for new players, more for veterans to get a feel for any changed mechanics. Dark Souls starts off much more brutal than MonHun. This one specifically, it holds your hand pretty hard for about an hour, then just lets go. But the low rank quests can be passed with ease, your biggest concern is going to be what weapon you like the most. Once you're comfortable with controls, you can get up to high rank, where the challenge is, and finally G rank, where every mistake you make is punishing, if not fatal. I imported the CPPXL because I knew how I wanted to play the game.
You don't need one, the game supports itself well without one, but you will either be using lock-on, or thumbing your touch screen all the time. Plus, as well as additional control options, it frees up touch screen UI space for more pertinent information or convenient actions. Underwater fights are a huge frustration for a lot of new and old players, and the CPP helps a ton.
